Does Storage Insurance Really Exist?

  • Currently, there is no insurance company offering insurance cover for stored goods.
  • Self storage customers need to arrange their own insurance, possibly under their home and contents insurance.
  • Storage customers store items at their own risk.

The Self Storage Association of Australasia (SSAA) have been investigating and trying to arrange an Insurance policy in Australia to offer insurance cover for stored items. At this stage, there is no insurer willing to offer the required coverage.

If another self storage facility tells you they have insurance, please check it out carefully and see if they identify the insurance company.

SSAA are continuing to work on a range of solutions to address both the hard insurance market and the complexity of offering customer goods insurance. The SSAA is working with existing insurers, brokers looking to develop new products, and independent consultants who have been engaged to advise the SSAA on alternative solutions. A feasibility study is underway to determine the most suitable alternatives for members and we aim to share more detailed information on completion of the study.

Stay tuned for updates.

Seasonal items are often bulky, needed infrequently, difficult to store and take up precious space that could be put to better use. If you're in business and face the challenge of dealing with seasonal changes that require specialized decorations, extra furniture and inventory items, or if you're a home owner grappling with holiday decorations taking over your space during the off-season, there's a solution. Renting a nearby storage unit allows you to say goodbye to seasonal clutter while preserving your cherished decorations and essential items. Likewise, event businesses, function centres and restaurants hosting events like weddings or corporate functions require a wide range of themed decorations and equipment, which can be impractical to store on-site due to space limitations. It can also be uneconomical to store hundreds of extra tables, chairs and table cloths on site, as the large amount of space needed to store them is not income-generating. Storing seasonal props or sporting equipment at home sacrifices valuable space that often can be put to better use. Accessing the items infrequently makes it hard to remember where you put that particular decoration or where you packed away those ski jackets and boots. It usually necessitates unpacking everything until you locate the item and then repacking everything, taking up time and adding to the chaos.
